Traditional routing follows the shortest distance, but this does not always minimise fuel demand - especially for vessels carrying large numbers of reefers.
To address this, Greensee.ai developed Blueroutes, an energy-optimised routing tool co-funded by the French Space Agency. The system builds digital twins of vessels and runs simulations of more than 30 alternative routes per crossing. By integrating high-resolution satellite data from Spire - including temperature, humidity, wind, dew point, and solar radiation - it predicts with over 97% accuracy how reefers will consume energy under different conditions. These insights allow operators to select routes that minimise fuel use while ensuring reliable cold-chain transport.
The technology proved effective across Atlantic and Pacific crossings. Savings reached up to 297 MWh per trip on the Atlantic and 701 MWh on the Pacific, with more than half of voyages delivering measurable reductions. On average, ships saved €38,000 per crossing, equating to €60 million annually across tested fleets. Annualised, this represents 408 GWh of energy saved, avoiding 90,000 tonnes of fuel and 280,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions.
The solution improves refrigerated container ships routing across oceans, and reduces CO2 emissions by over 300,000 tons per year. With precise weather forecasts, our solutions can find the most efficient routes across oceans, and save over 5% of the ships' total fuel! How? By finding the most adequate weather conditions for refrigerated containers to use the least energy possible. Thanks to effective AI solutions, we demonstrate that the shortest routes across oceans are not always the most efficient!
