Description

Zaphiro Technologies, a Swiss deep-tech company aiming to address this challenge by specialising in smart grids, partnered with SIG (Services Industriels de Genève) to strengthen grid reliability and enhance fault-detection across part of SIG’s distribution network.
The project installed 11 high-precision sensors that continuously measure voltage and current flows across the grid. By time-synchronising these measurements, the sensors give operators a live, detailed view of the network’s condition. Known technically as Distribution-Phasor Measurement Units (D-PMUs), they were connected to Zaphiro’s SynchroGuard platform, which aggregates and analyses data from 85 substations - the local facilities that route and convert electricity before it reaches homes and businesses - covering about 100 km of grid.

Impact & Result

This real-time visibility means faults can be detected and located far more quickly, reducing downtime and restoration costs. The system also helps identify anomalies before they cause failures, supporting predictive maintenance and extending the lifetime of grid assets.
A key advantage is efficiency: only 10–20% of substations need to be equipped to achieve full network visibility. Devices are non-intrusive, and can be installed in under an hour, enabling rapid deployment.

Solution Spotlight

SynchroGuard is an innovative monitoring and automation solution for smart grids. Thanks to unique measurement devices and advanced data-processing algorithms, it provides to utility operators a real-time view of the grid status, enables safe integration of renewable energies and electric vehicles by efficiently managing power flows, and improves grid reliability by accurately locating electrical faults. The goal is to support electrical utilities in the power grid modernisation and digitisation that is mainly driven by increasing power generation from renewables energies and electric vehicles as well as stringent regulatory requirements.
