In 2022, Trentino Trasporti introduced the Bus&Go service in Garda Trentino, powered by Shotl’s on-demand mobility platform. Traditional fixed-route buses often ran half-empty there, and the travel route along the mountainous region with scattered villages and fluctuating seasonal tourism was hard to optimise. This led to high operational costs due to long distances and fuel consumption, which also increased the related environmental impact, all without supplying adequate public transport coverage to the citizens of Alto Garda, Trento.
Bus&Go addresses these issues by enabling users to book shared rides through a smartphone app or a simple phone call. Their 5 vehicles will follow the local dynamics and transport passengers with similar routes and schedules together. This allows to reduce empty mileage by 15 to 20%, and raises vehicle occupancy to 6-7 passengers during the peak hours. By this, the buses are two to three times more energy efficient per passenger*kilometer than single occupancy combustion vehicles.
Environmental impact: The Bus&Go service reduced unnecessary vehicle mileage by replacing fixed bus routes with demand-responsive routing. By increasing vehicle occupancy and eliminating empty trips, the system achieved an estimated annual CO₂ reduction of 18 tons. Fewer kilometers driven also led to lower fuel consumption and reduced noise and air pollution in sensitive touristic areas. Economic impact: Bus&Go uses existing vehicles and drivers, requiring no new capital investment.
Shotl is a mobility platform that helps people share rides in minibuses that adapt to real-time passenger demand. Instead of using fixed bus routes that often run empty, Shotl allows passengers to book rides on their smartphones, and the system groups similar trips into a single, efficient journey. This reduces the number of vehicles on the road, lowers emissions, and offers better service to those living in suburban or low-density areas, including seniors and people without cars. City councils, universities, and business parks use Shotl to provide flexible, cost-effective mobility without needing new vehicles or infrastructure. The service is already active in several European cities, and has shown to reduce transport costs, increase accessibility, and support a shift toward more sustainable and inclusive public transport.
