Vallirana, a suburban municipality of about 15,000 residents in the mountainous outskirts of Barcelona, introduced a system that allows passengers to request shared rides in real time via a mobile app or by phone, dynamically pooling those with similar origins and destinations. Within months of launch, ridership increased by 277%, service levels improved 5.7× to reach underserved areas, and passenger density doubled per kilometer traveled. Between 25–40% of bookings were made by phone, supporting digital inclusion, while CO₂ emissions fell by 30–60% thanks to fewer empty bus trips and reduced car dependency. Operational efficiency also improved, with routes automatically optimized, leading the city to consider expanding the service.
The solution reduced significantly fuel consumption and vehicle kilometers driven. Estimated CO₂ savings: ~18–22 tons of CO₂eq/year. The number of passengers per km doubled, reducing empty miles and overall vehicle movement. The solution contributed to lower local air pollution and congestion in a semi-rural environment.
