Description

With more than 50 billion coffee capsules have a significant environmental impact. They massively contribute to landfill waste and a large portion of is not being recycled. Moreover, manufacturing and transportation require significant energy and resources. Zurich-based company FluidSolids AG has developed a revolutionary coffee capsule that is made from 100% biomass and is fully garden-compostable. What's more, it is compatible with a wide range of coffee machines as well as with the complex EU regulations. Together with its first customer Café Noir, a Zurich-based coffee roaster, the two pioneers have now implemented this new solution to create added value - economically and ecologically.

Impact & Result

The material offers significant ecological and economic benefits, including a CO₂ reduction of up to 80%; when scaled to 500 million parts per year, this translates to over 1,000 tons less CO₂ emitted compared to bioplastic capsules. As it is not plastic, it does not produce microplastics, and since it is derived from side-streams, it avoids competition with food crops. Additionally, it requires less energy to produce, reduces taxes and Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) costs for manufactured products, and provides independence from volatile oil price fluctuations.

Solution Spotlight

The technology aims at mass-producing parts entirely made from biomass. A technology to produce home-compostable and recyclable composites from residuals and waste streams. FluidSolids® biocomposites feature mechanical and ecological properties, making them suitable for use in countless application areas.
