Bordeaux
At the Assises de l'Économie de la Mer in Bordeaux on November 19, 2024, Socatra and Syroco shared initial performance results from deploying Syroco's optimization solution on the M/T Alcyone, a 183-meter tanker chartered by TotalEnergies. Equipped in early 2024 with Norsepower Rotor Sails, Alcyone utilized Syroco's platform for real-time route and operational optimization, leveraging weather conditions to enhance wind propulsion efficiency. Using advanced digital twins and simulations, the system guided crews to navigate complex conditions like waves and currents effectively. Additionally, the platform provided precise data on performance gains and the impact of wind assistance and optimized routing, enabling objective evaluation of fuel savings and return on investment, advancing maritime decarbonization efforts.
Combining wind assistance with advanced weather routing, the vessel achieved aggregate fuel savings of up to 21%, with wind assistance contributing 4–18% and routing optimization adding 3–18% individually. These gains translate into an average reduction of 50 tonnes of fuel per month, avoiding 1,800 tonnes of CO2 annually. These results highlight the platform's ability to enhance propulsion efficiency and significantly reduce the environmental impact of maritime operations, offering a scalable solution for sustainable shipping.
At TotalEnergies, we are proud to collaborate with Socatra and Syroco to promote innovative and sustainable solutions for maritime transportation. The integration of the Rotor Sails and of the Syroco weather routing platform on Alcyone demonstrates our commitment to reducing emissions and improving the energy efficiency of our operations. We thank all the teams involved for their commitment, these promising results underline the importance of digital tools and strengthen our determination to continue on this path.
Sébastien Roche, General Manager Shipping Performance and Innovation at TotalEnergies
Syroco supports the energy transition of maritime transportation. Syroco Live is a software platform that optimises energy efficiency, fuel consumption and carbon emissions of ships through multi-objective weather routing and real-time voyage optimisation. Using a digital twin of the ship, built with data and AI, that sails in parallel with the actual ship, the cloud-based solution leverages highly accurate metocean information to compute the most optimised routing. The user-friendly on-board user interface provides voyage optimisation to the crew, ensuring that the ship is always in optimum configuration to reduce fuel consumption while following route and schedule. The solution measures fuel consumption, carbon emissions and savings in real-time and delivers comprehensive reports and dashboards to both crew and fleet management.
