Intersell
Alphen aan den Rijn
Sustonable is a versatile material used in wall panels, kitchen countertops, and various types of furniture. It has been featured in a wide range of commercial and residential projects across the Netherlands, particularly as wall cladding and countertop surfaces.
One standout project was the Circular Bathroom initiative. Renovation company Intersell refurbished bathrooms in 150 social housing units, using Sustonable for the wall panels. The panels were installed using an aluminum hooklet system, allowing for easy assembly and disassembly. The social housing organizations involved were specifically looking for a solution that was both sustainable and detachable - Sustonable delivered on both fronts.
Each square meter produced uses 100 recycled bottles, saving up to 16 kg in weight and avoiding the use of 20 kg of natural stone. The price is comparable to traditional engineered stone and solid surface materials.
Artificial stone like Sustonable is a factory-made alternative to natural stone, and is a fast-growing segment of the € 20 billion global B2B countertop industry, in a market where around 400 million m2 of countertops were sold worldwide in 2016. Currently these kind of composite products are made in a batch process and bond by unsaturated polyester resin, in a chemical reaction process containing volatile reactive solvents. Sustonable have found a means to bond the materials without using reactive solvents at all, using fewer raw materials and making the entire product fully recyclable. Thin and ultralight, raw material usage is also very low - 65% lower than engineered quartz.
