Description

Reforestation efforts of Vivamos Mejor – a Guatemalan NGO – focus on restoring community land and their water reservoirs. These efforts specifically focus on planting both native and endangered species. The organization incorporated the practice of applying Mosan Biochar at seedling stage in an effort to increase tree survival and climate resilience in the field. The current survival rate is on average 70%, having been on a steady decrease in the past years given the climate change challenges as reduced and irregular precipitation patterns. The Mosan Biochar was first used in 2020 and is incorporated in 5000 trees in June 2025 in the seedling substrate mix in the nursery. The trees will be transplanted to the field in June 2026.

Impact & Result

The initiative offsets 1000 tCO2 through reforestation and sequesters permanently 120 kgCO2 through the use of Biochar. Through the application of Biochar, 1tonne of contaminated sewage sludge has been treated thus avoiding environmental contamination and 1.5 tCO2 emission from open air decomposition. The potential economic benefits of increasing the tree survival from 70% to 90% with the use of Biochar would result in direct economic savings of approximately USD 5,000 on replanting costs alone.

Solution Spotlight

More than 4.2 billion people lack access to safe sanitation (WHO). The consequences are disease spreading, high mortality rates, violence on women, and environmental contamination. Plus, the sanitation and water system is highly inefficient with 80% of the wastewater generated globally flowing back into the ecosystem without being treated or reused (The United Nations World Water Development Report, 2017). Mosan is providing dignifying, healthy and safe sanitation, while protecting and benefiting the environment by avoiding pollution and closing nutrient cycles. The Mosan solution is a decentralized, off-grid, in-home, and waterless service for people in densely populated settlements. The service ensures safe containment, transport and transformation of human excreta. Mosan employs circular economy principles, transforming excreta into valuable resources and reintroducing it into the economy thus shaping a paradigm shift and a creative movement that leads to long-term change. Mosan applies human-and planet-centered-design approaches, working closely with communities, building local capacities and ensuring high adoption rates
