Madelaine Bocco
Cotonou
This women is the owner and the manager of a small restaurant. She used to run a gazoline generator set to produce electricity to power lights, and TV in her restaurant. When we presented her our solution, she decided to trust us and to move to a Qotto Solar Home System. She declared that during African Football Cup, she was the only one in the district to have enough electricity to broadcast 3 football games in a row.
That was very convenient for her, as SHS are cheaper, more reliable and more sustainable than generator and than the grid itself. In Benin, Burkina Faso and Ivory Coast, we deployed over 20,000 Solar Home Systems.
At date, access to electricity and to essential telecommunication services is not a commodity in some of the sub saharan countries. As a result, Qotto developed a modular and autonomous Solar Home System, connected with frugal Internet of Things (IoT) and Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communication, to provide better access to energy in off-grid areas. This standalone Solution is based on few simple components (e.g. solar panel, charge controller, smart card, batteries and appliances) and will allow quick and easy access to electricity directly in the customer's home. Qotto distributes, leases and maintains the system, while the client subscribes and pays (via mobile money services) in a pay-as-you-go format. In addition to that, the system allows for high flexibility and customisation, as each product is scalable according to consumer's needs. Over time additional solar panels can be installed in order to satisfy higher energy needs. This Solution aims at improving the quality of life in developing countries, as an example key applications include: lighting, TV, radio, mobile charging, cooling devices, in remote areas.
