Description

After four years of operation, several solar inverters unexpectedly began to fail, with some experiencing catastrophic breakdowns, including explosions. The inverter manufacturer swiftly responded by replacing the faulty units at no cost to the producer, as the equipment was still under warranty. However, during this period, the producer incurred significant expenses due to production downtime. Even after the replacements, some issues persisted, and their impact continued to affect the producer. By this time, the site had three generations of inverter power modules from two different manufacturers. The producer reached out to Enging to assess the operational condition of these power modules. Enging provided the producer with insight into the issue, revealing that several monitored power modules were in poor condition and at high risk of failure, leading to further production downtime and increased costs for the producer.

Impact & Result

Enging successfully identified the root cause of the inverter failures and worked closely with the manufacturer to implement modifications that significantly extended the operational life of the inverters. As a result, the producer now has more reliable equipment and has significantly reduced non-production costs caused by unplanned inverter stoppages. Enging's system ultimately saved the producer over €300,000, delivering an immediate return on investment.

Solution Spotlight

PreditPV is an innovative solution designed to keep solar farms running smoothly by detecting degradations in solar inverters and transformers before the total failure happens. It uses non-invasive sensors that measure the electrical variables of these critical equipment without the need to physically interfere with its operation. This system continuously monitors the health of these equipment in real-time, making the data accessible from anywhere with an internet connection. If a potential issue is detected, the system alerts the user immediately, allowing them to take action before any serious damage occurs. This predictive approach not only saves money by avoiding costly repairs but also prevents unexpected shutdowns that could lead to significant production losses. PreditPV offers a reliable, accurate, and easy-to-use solution to ensure the operations are always running at peak efficiency.
