story image

Description

Soraytec's power-line waveform streamer was installed at a distribution transformer for a nylon manufacturing plant in Nigeria. This transformer, situated at the end of the distribution line, often experiences poor efficiency and suboptimal power quality. These conditions lead to increased heat generation from reactive power losses and accelerate the aging of equipment. In developing markets like Nigeria, distribution inefficiencies are more pronounced, as evidenced by the average power factor of 0.8, highlighting significant opportunities for mitigation and improved energy performance.

Impact & Result

Initial data from the pilot installation revealed daily energy savings of 400 kWh, achieved with only minor system adjustments. This equates to a reduction of 250 kg of CO2e per day, or roughly 90 metric tons of CO2 annually—the equivalent of taking 22 cars off the road for a year. These results surpassed initial estimates of the site's potential savings.

Solution Spotlight

Soraytec's IoT real-time solution is the first monitoring solution which connects directly at the medium voltage levels of the power line. This is a paradigm shift in the industry. Alternative solutions coming from large industrial players all are using instrument transformers to measure at the low voltage side. This is not only impractical due to the larger number of sensors, but also inaccurate when monitoring high frequency harmonics (supra harmonics above the 50th). The improved actionable data helps our customers, the utility companies to safe up to 25% of operation expenses and mitigates the duration and frequency of events such a black outs, by characterizing the same (machine learning algorithms) and localizing them. The in-line high frequency measurements allow the customer to receive all information related to the flow of electrons in the pwerline in real time.
