A key use case of molluSCAN-eye is its deployment by the government of French Polynesia to safeguard the pearl farming industry in the Takapoto and Takaroa atolls. Since November 2023, four biomonitoring modules have been installed at 7m and 15m depths within these lagoons to continuously measure the health of black-lipped pearl oysters (Pinctada Margaritifera), crucial for cultivating Tahitian pearls known worldwide for their unique quality.
By enabling early detection of pollution, molluSCAN-eye helps avoid losses from oyster mortality and production downtime, translating into significant monthly savings for the 500 farms and 1,300 employees relying on this sector, which represents 70% of local exports. The system’s low operational costs and rapid payback time generate a strong ROI by safeguarding revenues and reducing costly reactive measures in this vital economic activity. Pearl farming generates over $30 million annually.
