story image

Description

In partnership with Velor, we launched the world’s first fully circular cycling jersey. Starting with 300 discarded jerseys collected and transformed into new garments, we’re now scaling up to collect 5,000 old jerseys for future production. In today’s linear economy, the ‘take, make, and dispose’ model drives significant harm to ecosystems, accelerates climate change, and depletes valuable resources. Velor is committed to a different approach, using only existing resources to create sustainable options for cyclists. Their goal is to shift from a linear to a circular system, giving used garments a second life instead of sending them to landfills. Through our collaboration, materials are expertly reused at their original quality, enabling the production of eco-friendly cycling apparel and substantially reducing environmental impact.

Impact & Result

Reduction of GHG of 29% on the material used to manufacture cycling jersey, and keep carbons in the loop. At industrial scale (from 2028), this solution will be economically more competitive than traditional/ virgin polyester alternative.

Solution Spotlight

The Solution aims at providing a sustainable, and profitable option for recycling polyester, with a particular focus on what mechanical recycling is not able to treat. This Solution relies on microwave-assisted alkaline hydrolysis to go back to terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol, saving up to 60% of CO2 emission compared with the existing production processes. This allows us to go back to what is normally used to produce PET and polyester fibers with a purity as high as the one from fossil fuels. Re-polymerizing the molecules it is possible to obtain a new polyester without using oil (at least 0 kg of petroleum naphtha per Kg of PET produced) and with the same quality (i.e., physical-mechanical properties, scrap rate, etc.).
