story image

Description

After winning a call for tenders in 2018, the Solution partnered with Akuo Energy, the French renewable energy company, to build an 18.5 hectare ground-mounted photovoltaic farm with excavated waste soil in the commune of Annet-sur-Marne. The solar power plant “Les Gabots”, born in 2020, is situated 1 km west of the city center and covers the power supply needs of 3,700 households, i.e. nearly 10,000 inhabitants, making the commune of 3,300 inhabitants an energy positive commune.

Impact & Result

The solar farm built on waste soil prevents the emission of 847 tons of CO₂ annually, demonstrating a significant environmental benefit by utilizing previously unused land for renewable energy production.

Solution Spotlight

Land development and new constructions result in significant disruption to landscapes, and solutions are needed to reduce the impact of these developments. This Solution tackles this challenge by re-using inert (non polluted) construction soil to create self-financed land-use developments. These land-use developments are designed to make an environmental and societal contribution with partnerships in the fields of renewable energy, urban agriculture and conservation of wildlife. This process allows a sound and positive management of inert construction soil, which accounts into close to 60% of total waste in France. Given the fact that land-use developments created through this Solution are located close to city centres, it avoids trucks transporting soil to go to their traditional dumping places located far from the city. Through this Solution, cities find a way to finance land-use developments and thus increase green areas. This is a turnkey solution for local communities, allowing them to focus on their needs in terms of land-use developments without concerns about how to finance or to manage the day-to-day complexity of such projects.
