Upper floor "penthouse suite" in MGM Casino was uncomfortably hot and could not be cooled adequately using traditional air conditioning. The application of a cool roof coating made with Arkema's waterborne PVDF not only cooled the penthouse, but was proven to retain its "cool properties" without the need for re-application for almost 20 years now. We now have several other examples like CDG Airport in Paris, Wells Fargo Bank in Florida, historic building restoration in Philadelphia.
A standard cool roof in a hot climate can reduce more than 2 kg of CO2 per square meter annually. For instance, a warehouse in Southern California with a 10,000 m² roof would save 10,000 m² × 2 kg = 20 tons of CO2 per year.
White cool roof coatings are well known to reduce energy consumption and keep buildings "cool". However, traditional cool roof technologies last just a year or two and require periodic re-application. Further, they quickly become dirty and/or attacked by microbiological moulds and mildew. The Arkema fluoropolymer solution enables a massive quantum improvement in durability and long-lasting solar reflectivity.
