Description

For over a decade, Dunkerque in Northern France successfully operated a bagged recyclables co-collection program. However, removing bags from the municipal solid waste stream before incineration remained a major challenge. Manual extraction was strenuous and hazardous, violating French regulations and exposing workers to unsafe, unpleasant conditions. To address this, Waste Robotics delivered a customized, fully automated robotic sorting line tailored to 3Wayste’s needs. This automated system has significantly improved operational efficiency, processing up to 24 tons per hour and extracting 3,600 bags per hour.

Impact & Result

This streamlined workflow has increased productivity and ensured effective separation of bagged organics. By automating the bag extraction process, Dunkerque now saves $300,000 annually, significantly improving its financial performance. The resulting cost savings enabled the municipality to achieve a two-year payback period on the robotic line, underscoring the solution's cost-effectiveness and long-term value.

Solution Spotlight

Waste Robotics offers systems, that did not exist 7-8 years ago, and makes it possible to compete with an increase of performance and economies over Capex and Opex. Technological advances in recent years have made it possible to put artificial intelligence and robotics at the service of the environment at more affordable costs. The Waste Robotics system uses cutting-edge alternative technology that has more capacity than human sorters. The Waste Robotics sorting system allows to implement a source source-separated organics in a single collection combining in the existing bin the organics bags and the garbage streams. It is simple and convenient for all citizens, reduces trucking and GHG emissions, it is a lot cheaper than traditional brown or green collection bins and more economical than competition.
