This real-world deployment combines wind-assisted propulsion with AI-powered voyage optimisation on Alcyone, a medium-range tanker owned and operated by Socatra and chartered by TotalEnergies. The vessel was equipped with Norsepower’s RotorSails to harness wind energy and Syroco’s onboard digital twin-based platform for voyage optimisation. Syroco Live provides real-time recommendations to the vessel master to optimise routing, speed, and trim. This combination enables the crew to dynamically adapt to changing metocean conditions, maximising the benefit of wind propulsion while maintaining operational efficiency. The deployment also fosters strong engagement from the masters and crew, who use the system to refine voyage planning and vessel handling. By aligning environmental goals with performance and cost savings, the project aimed to reduce emissions and fuel consumption, while ensuring regulatory compliance with FuelEU Maritime, EU ETS, and other decarbonisation frameworks.
Environmental: After 14 months of continuous deployment, Socatra was able to measure that 1,000 tons of fuel and 3,000 tons of CO2 were saved annually through optimised use of wind-assisted propulsion and digital routing.
Economic: The vessel achieved 10% average fuel savings across 27 voyages. The solution delivered rapid return on investment, with payback in under 6 months, and supports long-term compliance with carbon pricing mechanisms such as EU ETS.
At TotalEnergies, we are proud to collaborate with Socatra and Syroco to promote innovative and sustainable solutions for maritime transportation. The integration of the Rotor Sails and of the Syroco weather routing platform on Alcyone demonstrates our commitment to reducing emissions and improving the energy efficiency of our operations. We thank all the teams involved for their commitment, these promising results underline the importance of digital tools and strengthen our determination to continue on this path.
Sébastien Roche, General Manager Shipping Performance and Innovation at TotalEnergies
Syroco supports the energy transition of maritime transportation. Syroco Live is a software platform that optimises energy efficiency, fuel consumption and carbon emissions of ships through multi-objective weather routing and real-time voyage optimisation. Using a digital twin of the ship, built with data and AI, that sails in parallel with the actual ship, the cloud-based solution leverages highly accurate metocean information to compute the most optimised routing. The user-friendly on-board user interface provides voyage optimisation to the crew, ensuring that the ship is always in optimum configuration to reduce fuel consumption while following route and schedule. The solution measures fuel consumption, carbon emissions and savings in real-time and delivers comprehensive reports and dashboards to both crew and fleet management.
