Iceland Foods, one of Britain’s fastest-growing and most innovative grocery retailers, introduces a strong, lightweight, reusable, and moisture-resistant carrier bag made of Paptic® material in all its stores. The wood-fibres used in the bag are sourced from sustainably managed forests. The bag, at the end of its lifespan after multiple reuses, is recyclable with paper or cardboard. “We continuously look for ways to improve our offering for our customers and to meet our ambitious sustainability goals. Therefore, after an extensive period of piloting this bag in stores across the country we have moved to switch to offering paper bags by Paptic® as the best choice for our customers and the environment”, Mark Armstrong, Senior Packaging Technologist at Iceland Foods. Paptic® offers moisture-resistance, reusability, and recyclability while using 40% less raw materials than other strong paper alternatives.
Customer's audited calculations are not available, but the estimated impacts are: - use of bag; earlier 1 time, now 3-8 times per bag - carbon footprint reduced by 70%; feedstock changed from 100% fossil to 100% renewable - ERP (Extended Producer Responsibility) costs are being decreased by appr. 30%, as plastic's EPR costs are higher than of paper. The EPR costs are being updated in line with the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, and the costs will be revised based on recyclability.
The material combines the versatility of plastics, the renewability and recyclability of paper, with the tactual properties of non-woven materials. Its main raw material is sustainably sourced wood fibre, the same material used in paper and paperboards. Other raw materials are biobased and compostable man-made fibres chosen based on the requirements set by the application, and additives used in the production of paper and paperboards. The Paptic technology is based on a novel paper production technology called foam-forming, meaning the replacement of water in paper production by foam. This enables broadening the product features to areas impossible with traditional paper production technologies. Paptic can be converted into various packaging products with the same production lines and machines used in converting plastics and paper enabling the fast market adoption. Paptic differs from plastics and paper in how it feels in hand creating a high quality impression. With Paptic material the retailers and brand owners can shift to sustainable solution without jeopardising the brand image.
