Orval Abbey - Brewery & Cheese Factory
Florenville
The Orval Abbey used to discharge wastewater from its brewery into a stream located in the heart of the Natura 2000 area. An aging treatment plant struggled to handle this wastewater and could not cope with the increased production of the brewery. Additionally, the brewery's yeast and the dairy's whey, considered waste, were transported by truck several times a week. The implementation of Fluid-Anyole allowed Orval Abbey to internalize, treat, and convert all these liquid waste products from the brewery and dairy into biogas. The industrial wastewater, now much less polluted, could be sent back without issues to the existing treatment plant, which became easier to manage and required fewer chemicals. There is no longer a need for trucks to transport waste, which has made the technicians' work easier and reduced the environmental impact of this intervention.
Fluid-Anyole enabled the brewery and cheese dairy to fully internalize their liquid discharges while achieving an 80% reduction in COD levels in the water. To date, the entire treatment plant has reduced its electricity consumption by approximately 40%. Additionally, Fluid-Anyole generates around 500 Nm³ of biogas daily, which is converted into electricity and heat, directly benefiting the industry. This has resulted in an estimated annual financial impact of approximately €200,000.
Anatis is a company that has developed a tailor-made solution for treating industrial wastewater with a high organic load, called Fluid-Anyole. The treatment, which comes upstream of conventional wastewater treatment plants, is carried out using a biomethanisation process which has the advantage of providing high stability for its bacterial bed. This baffled process ensures a significant reduction in carbon pollution while producing little sludge and consuming little energy. The stability of the bacterial bed means we can provide solutions tailored to different types of industry (agro-food, pharmaceutical, papermaking). Depending on the needs, we can treat all the wastewater or just a small part of it, concentrating on the 20% of the volume that causes 80% of an industry's water treatment problems. Biomethanisation treatment also means biogaz production. With the organic load reduced by at least 80%, the downstream treatment plant will consume less energy and discharge less sludge.
