story image

Description

Our adopter, a fish farm, implemented this innovative solution to generate electricity for plant operations and to pump water into the fish pools. The microturbine was installed by suspending it with cables on both sides, allowing it to float steadily on the water’s surface, anchored securely to the banks. This solution offers significant financial and environmental advantages: it operates at a low cost with stable, high efficiency, and it is sustainable and pollution-free. Our primary goal is to replace gasoline and diesel generators with this clean energy alternative to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and effectively contribute to Net Zero targets.

Impact & Result

The solution significantly reduces CO₂ emissions, cutting approximately 38 gCO₂-eq per kWh compared to PV systems. This translates to an annual reduction of about 330 kgCO₂-eq per kW versus PV. Running 24/7 year-round, it requires no battery storage, reducing both capital and operational costs, while its efficiency shortens the payback period by about 15% compared to a similar PV system.

Solution Spotlight

This solution, named by Floating Drum Turbine or FDT, provides distributed generation of hydroelectricity from the water streams (canals/rivers) using an innovative micro-turbine which is registered in the WIPO-PCT system. This turbine consists of an undershot waterwheel floated on a water stream using a buoyant skid, and be anchored to the water bankside using some cables or hinged arms. By the way, the water stream makes the turbine and its coupled generator to rotate which causes to generate the electricity. This solution provides steady electricity generation (365 days, 24 hours) with constant efficiency.
