The city of Mykolaiv
Mykolaiv
Since the start of Russia's invasion in February 2022, Mykolaiv has faced relentless bombardment, resulting in extensive damage to infrastructure, including the central water supply network. With the city situated near a river and the sea, untreated water fails to meet drinking standards. The damage to the power grid causes interruptions in the electricity supply needed for water treatment. In response, Boreal Light's expertise in providing clean drinking water to off-grid communities offered a simple and effective solution to Mykolaiv's urgent needs.
Boreal Light manufactured and installed 5 solar water desalination systems to Mykolaiv, producing 125,000 L/h of hygiene drinking water, covering the whole population of the city (250,000 people). Systems can work using only solar energy, but can also work in hybrid mode (from grid during the night), doubling the capacity of water produced (covering up to 500,000 people).
Producing 125,000 litres of drinking water per hour, Providing at least 460,000 people with clean water, Using solar energy saves four tonnes of CO2 per day, Interest in the technology from over 250 Ukrainian municipalities in four regions, Providing basic services for people in need, bringing resiliance to a city in war, generating 6 quality jobs for 5 ladies and one gentelman in Mykolaive. The project won in May 2025 a recognition award of Global Water Award in London.
For off-grid communities around the globe, access to water can be very complex, and access to clean water can be even more difficult. WaterKiosk is capable of delivering high quality hygiene drinking, irrigation, fish farm and sanitation water from any kind of high saline and polluted water resources. The main characteristics of this solution is that it is powered fully by solar, the simplicity of its design and its affordability. Systems offered by Boreal Light are ideal island solutions with no need of battery, diesel, or grid, just powered by solar! It requires low maintenance, as over 80% of the maintenance needs just a wrench and a screw driver!
