Description

Sea Shepherd began its journey by utilizing a cartridge-based filtration system to address marine pollution but has significantly upgraded its technology in 2024 with the implementation of a larger, automatic self-cleaning filter. This advancement marks a major step in its mission to protect marine ecosystems. Many sea-faring vessels contribute to ocean pollution by releasing greywater directly into the seas. This greywater often includes waste from washing machines and other onboard activities, posing a threat to marine life and the overall health of the oceans.

Impact & Result

Through the use of Planetcare filters they can avoid over 90 % of their microfiber emissions. There are no direct economic benefits from a cleaner environment however through the use of its first filter an estimated 2,6 kg of fibers were NOT released into the sea.

Solution Spotlight

We regularly ingest & inhale microfibres - tiny plastic fibres that our clothes, carpets, blankets etc. shed during use. By washing our clothes, we are releasing about one plastic bag worth of microfibres into the environment every week. Microfibres from washing are a major contributor to microplastic pollution. Microfibers in the environment enter the food chain and end up back on our plates. Attracting dirt, toxins and pathogenic bacteria they cause poisoning, genetic disruption (also in marine life!) and through the food chain affect humans. We eat 5g of microplastics every week, it is as if we ate a credit card. Our solution is a filter that attaches to the washing machine and captures microfibres before they enter the drain. The solution improves the quality of our waters by preventing the microfibres from being discharged into sewage and oceans and thus entering our environment. The dirty cartridges are being cleaned and reused and the mash caught recycled.
