Description

As part of its Augmented Beauty strategy, L’Oréal partnered with LONGTIME® to embed product repairability at the heart of its eco-design process. Together, we implemented the RepairAbility software on over 15 products, enabling a systematic, measurable approach to improve product durability. This collaborative effort involved cross-functional teams—design, R&D, CSR, and marketing—working with a shared goal: reduce environmental impact through longer-lasting products. The tool set clear objectives, with only products achieving a minimum class B score being approved for market. Beyond technical evaluation, RepairAbility fostered a cultural shift within L’Oréal, turning repairability into a tangible, operational lever for sustainability.

Impact & Result

Improving repairability of 50% of beauty-tech devices extends product life by 50% and avoids 370 tCO₂e/year for 100,000 units. Over 5 years: 1,850 tCO₂e saved. This reduces waste, material use, and supports EU compliance. Economically, it saves €700k for a €50k investment—ROI over 1,300%. The approach boosts after-sales performance, brand reputation, and accelerates circularity at scale.

L'Oréal's aim is to make its appliances more sustainable. The durability of appliances is part of L'Oréal's environmental commitments. I had started a reparability study, in autonomy, based on the French reparability index. But there was too much bias, which is why we turned to LONGTIME solution. We have carried out several scoring exercises and integrated this assessment into our product launch processes.

Solution Spotlight

RepairAbility® is a Saas solution designed to help manufacturer assess and manage the repairability of their products. Aligned with the European standard EN 45554, which provides a methodological framework for assessing repairability, the tool reflects the latest regulatory advancements under the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) and Green Claims initiative. Backed by a team of durability experts, RepairAbility® offers a comprehensive evaluation based on objective criteria, including product disassembly, accessibility and affordability of spare parts, and after-sales service quality. This methodology enables companies to identify weaknesses in product design and implement corrective measures to enhance repairability. As a strategic tool, RepairAbility® helps businesses comply with evolving regulations, enhance their brand image, and innovate by embedding eco-design principles from the outset of product development.
