Montgomery County, Maryland
Montgomery
Montgomery County has a 100% carbon emissions reduction target for 2035 and sought a partner to decarbonise its transit bus fleet. It selected AlphaStruxure, a joint venture of Schneider Electric to design, build, finance, own, and operate a microgrid at its Brookville depot. The 6.5 MW microgrid can support 70 electric buses and integrates solar photovoltaic canopies, renewable natural gas-ready on-site generation, battery storage, microgrid controls, and electric bus chargers, ensuring the fleet’s continuous operation regardless of utility outages.
Transitioning these 70 buses from diesel to electric, powered by the on-site clean energy microgrid, will reduce lifetime emissions by 62 percent equivalent to more than 160,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas reduction over the next 25 years.
This project has been garnering attention around our nation and throughout the world because it is innovative, groundbreaking, and will help us achieve our ambitious climate action plan to reduce all carbon emissions by 2035.
Marc Elrich, County Executive
When the energy demand from a building is likely to exceed the available supply from the transformer when EV charging is installed, EcoStruxure EV Charging Expert redistributes the loads, eliminating the need to upgrade a transformer or electrical devices in the building. Moreover, it manages access control to EV charging, and registers charging transactions data for cost allocation or analytics. EcoStruxure EV Charging Expert manages a network of up to 100 AC or DC chargers, and is upgradeable to up to 1000. Also, it operates autonomously and locally and does not require a subscription, and can provide a single point of access for remote supervision of EV charging stations.
