At our Crossfield Gas Storage Facility north of Calgary, our flare system had become a real issue for the surrounding community. We were receiving ongoing complaints about visible black smoke and strong odors whenever we flared. To fix this, we brought in a Questor Q500 Thermal Oxidizer in 2004. The unit was designed to handle our dehydrator still-column vapors and stabilizer tank gases — a difficult stream with very high-water content and methane/BTEX hydrocarbons — and to combust them cleanly and reliably.
The Q500 eliminated black smoke and odor, ending community complaints. Stack-top temperature control cut flare fuel-gas use ~80%. 99.99% combustion efficiency ensured reliable combustion of methane/VOCs. Third-party tests confirmed capacity above nameplate. After 20+ years, it still runs with minimal maintenance.
Focused on clean air technologies that safely and cost-effectively improve air quality, support energy efficiency and greenhouse gas emission reductions. The combustion technology is utilized in the effective management of Methane, Volatile Organic Hydrocarbons and other Hazardous Air Pollutants gases, ensuring sustainable development, compliance with ESG goals, community acceptance and regulatory compliance. The technology also provides heat to power generation technology and is currently introducing solutions to various markets including landfill biogas, syngas, waste engine exhaust, geothermal and solar, cement plant waste heat in addition to a wide variety of oil and gas projects.
