Description

The Calcaires de la Sambre project showcases how solar energy can be seamlessly integrated into industrial operations. Located in Belgium, this initiative involved installing a ground-mounted photovoltaic (PV) system on the site of a limestone quarry. The project was completed in just seven months, adhering to strict environmental standards. Innovative practices were employed, such as using screw-pile structures instead of concrete foundations to preserve soil quality and ensure the installation is easily removable. Solar panels were elevated to allow sheep grazing, promoting biodiversity and efficient land use. This approach highlights the synergy between renewable energy production and ecological stewardship. The client benefits from significant cost savings, with solar energy supplied at rates 30% lower than grid prices, while excess energy is fed back into the grid. The project prevents over 1,000 tons of CO₂ emissions annually, advancing both environmental and economic goals.

Impact & Result

The Calcaires de la Sambre project saves over 1,000 tons of CO₂ annually, equal to removing 200 cars from the road. Screw-pile foundations reduce waste and preserve soil, supporting biodiversity with sheep grazing under the panels. Economically, the client saves €60,000 annually by purchasing solar energy at 30% below grid prices, with a 10-year payback period and full ownership of the installation thereafter, ensuring long-term cost efficiency.

Solution Spotlight

Their solution intents to remove the obstacles corporations face in their transition to solar energy. In this sense, it helps businesses transition to solar power without having to carry the costs in terms of financial and time investments. Skysun takes care of every aspect of the project (from feasibility studies to permits), investing in the solar power modules and overseeing their installation. In the long run, operation and maintenance are also taken care of. Thus, the client benefits from a free PV installation and, at the end of the contract, the client becomes the owner of the solar panels. Skysun’s Solar Finance’s success is tied to the success of its customers as the more green energy is produced, the better the return on investment for Skysun, enabling the company to invest in new projects – thereby increasing its positive impact on the environment.
