Westerlo
Instead of seeing the moat as an obstacle, the water is strategically used as a source of heat. We made a Digital Twin of the moat to simulate the cooling of the water when we extract the entire heat demand from it. This feasibility study shows us that an aquathermal installation of 50 kW meets the heat demand of the greenhouse. Aquathermy thus became a no-brainer for the castle in Westero. We worked together with Eco-Technix for the installation. We installed heat exchangers in the moat, with which we extract the energy that is naturally stored in nature. Through a closed system and a pipe network of 100 meters, this heat ends up in the heat pump of the castle. The pump heats the water that flows through the radiators to a pleasant temperature. The installation works both in the summer when the temperatures are mild and in the winter when the water temperature barely rises above freezing. Heating in this way is economically advantageous because it requires much less energy to heat.
In order to preserve the castle, it is necessary to provide a basic temperature in the building. This is why the owner was looking for a technique to heat the building both sustainably and economically. The technical installation consists of an aquathermy installation in combination with a CHP. This has reduced the emissions from the heating by 50% and has guaranteed the owner a stable energy price over a long period. The payback time was at the moment of investment 4 years.
Aquathermy is a heating and cooling technique in which surface water from rivers, lakes or canals is used to provide buildings with heat or cold. The potential of rivers, lakes and canals is firstly calculated by use of an own developed energy model (also called digital twin). Based on these models, the technical design and installation of the aquathermal energy system follows afterwards. The projects that EXTRAQT currently carries out from A to Z, ranging from feasibility studies to operational installations, are closed aquathermal systems. In this case, heat exchangers are placed in the water, which extract the energy that is naturally stored in the water sources. By placing the exchangers directly in the water, a circuit is formed between the exchanger and the heat pump. This allows the building to be heated in a sustainable way with the energy that is in the environment. The great advantage is that they require little to no maintenance and are easy to install.
