story image

Description

The goal is to enhance the living conditions of residents in multiple villages within the Chichaoua province of the Marrakech-Safi Region (Morocco) by providing access to clean drinking water through atmospheric water capture technology. Igharmane is among the first villages selected for this initiative. This project will establish a sustainable, reliable, and affordable source of drinking water while raising awareness and educating the local population on water resource management. Additionally, local water governance will be reinforced. A cooperative of seven widows from the village will be supported in managing the facilities, handling maintenance and minor repairs, and overseeing water sales, providing them with a source of income. By the end of this pilot project, the Marrakech-Safi Region and its coalition of partners will have a model to effectively expand access to atmospheric water across the region.

Impact & Result

The village will be equipped with 200 panels. Each panel produces ave.1 liter drinking water/day. Thus over 1-year period, it saves 73,000 pcs 1L plastic bottles; 7,300 liters oil; 5,840 KG coal; 3,066 Kilolitres gas; 46,720 Kg CO2., 608 Mn tons underground & surface water Fresh water is 3 times cheaper than plastic bottled water (avg. €0.09/ liter vs. avg. €0,25); No transportation cost. Reduces social and health costs resulting from plastic waste, oil consumption/CO2 & pollution.

Solution Spotlight

Agua de Sol has developed the SunAir Fountain®, a panel resembling a solar panel but designed as a water panel. It harnesses two abundant and renewable resources: atmospheric humidity and sunlight, by capturing molecules of water in the air at night and transforming them into water using the Sun. The SunAir Fountain® is easy to install; requires very limited maintenance. It is scalable, from 1 panel up to hundreds & thousands. It provides a basic necessity: drinking water, which can improve the situation for families living in areas affected by water scarcity, like depleting ground water or polluted resources as well as have an impact on environment. The SunAir Fountain® is an economical and environmental friendly alternative to increasing water scarcity in general and to bottled water issues in particular. Finally, thanks to the use of solar energy, no electricity is taken from the grid, which reduces the carbon footprint and the water is “carbon – free”.
