Energy and nutrients reclaimed from domestic wastewater treatment plants

Identification

Hydrell technology was invented in 2016. It has developed a wastewater treatment technology that allows the recovery of energy, nutrients, and clean water at a much smaller footprint and price than competing technologies. The technology will also be more robust than current comparable systems. Using the Hydrell technology, users have an incentive to treat their wastewater by saving 30%+ of their total operating costs. In its simplest form, the electrolysis of wastewater is catalysed by electroactive microorganisms oxidising organic and inorganic compounds on the anode (the positive electrode). The reaction products are carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrogen gas (N2). At the same time, hydrogen gas (H2) is formed on the cathode and converted to methane by methanogenic microbes.
