Maturity stage TRL 7 - Prototype testing in the real world

Industrial operators are increasingly setting targets for their greenhouse gas emissions, but many don't have a way to measure their emissions cost-effectively. GHGSat solves that problem by using nano-satellites to detect and quantify greenhouse gas emissions from industrial facilities, anywhere in the world. GHGSat's satellite provides a birds-eye view of any site on the planet, no matter how remote or isolated. Using this satellite in orbit, we can detect emissions of methane and carbon dioxide for specific industrial sites. Our solution offers unparalleled resolution, for a lower cost than traditional methods. Gas wells and industrial facilities are often in inaccessible areas or spread out over vast areas. Using traditional methods of measuring emissions from locations like that can be costly, inconsistent, and hazardous to personnel. Monitoring GHG emissions is valuable on many different levels, such as: - Economics: methane in particular is a valuable commodity, and in many cases methane leaks can be repaired with a positive ROI. - Health & Safety: methane is explosive and leaks can endanger both employees and any local residents near a leak. - Regulations: customers are subject to a wide range of environments, and are increasingly setting their own internal targets even where there are no regulations. - Competition: several customers are interested in monitoring each other or alternative energy sources – e.g. gas vs. coal.

The Environmental Benefits

  • Observations from space provide a consistent method of measurement for all sites in the world
  • Minimal costs to monitor numerous wells when compared to traditional methods
  • Compiling information from the platform and other services gives a predictive method of leak detection
  • The system does not require any on-site equipment at the source

The Financial Benefits

  • Range from 20-50% cost savings, depending on sector and geography
