EcoCore®

A cost-effective plastic manufacturing technology for recycled and lightweight packaging

Identification

EcoCore® plastic moulding technology creates more sustainable packaging with skin-foam-skin walls in an instant. It is used for reusable, as well as recyclable single-use packaging, that is low-cost, lightweight, insulated, strong and very durable. For example, reusable EcoCore to-go cups cost the same as popular paper single-use alternatives but cut greenhouse gases (GHG) by 20 - 30% after just 2 uses and halve the risk of land and sea waste pollution.

Packaging is used everywhere from to-go food service to FMCG and industry. But, it is having a significant damaging impact on our environment — producing unnecessary greenhouse gases (GHGs) that are causing global warming as well as polluting water and land with waste. Indeed packaging alone contributes 5% of carbon emissions for food production. EcoCore technology will help to solve these pressing environmental problems by making it simple and cost-effective for packaging manufacturers and brands to use more sustainable packaging that is reusable, recyclable and lightweight. The new technology is easy to use and works with existing injection moulding machines as well as tried and trusted polypropylene plastic. EcoCore® can already be found in applications that are in use, or under trial, by well-known organisations across many different sectors — from Waitrose to The NHS and Hay Festival. The technology is patent protected and available for use under licence.

Implementation Stories

EcoCore® by Bockatech
Implemented by Borealis in Vienna (Austria) in 2021

Borealis is one of the world’s leading providers of advanced and circular polyolefin solutions and European market leader in base chemicals, fertilizers and the mechanical recycling of plastics. The funding will see Borealis take a minority stake in the UK-based sustainable packaging innovator, Bockatech Limited. Borealis and Bockatech have already had several occasions to collaborate, notably at COP26 during which the conference venue secured more than 70000 EcoCore reusable cups. Borealis’ commitment to plastics circularity. The move entails joint market and material development in the long term as well as the scaling of the EcoCore platform itself. The aim is to enable a greater number of global customers, value chain partners, and supply chain players to benefit from a broader range of lighter weight foam-based applications, primarily in the packaging sector. The partnership has already chalked up success with the 2020 “” pilot project at Borealis sites in Belgium.
