Soil is essential for food production, biodiversity, and climate resilience, yet 60-70% of EU soils are unhealthy, with over a billion tonnes lost annually due to erosion. The degradation, driven by pollution and unsustainable practices, costs over €50 billion per year. CLIC TERRA, a biodegradable mulch made from recycled human hair and natural fibers, replaces plastic and peat-based mulches. It enhances soil health, retains moisture and nutrients, and prevents chemical and plastic pollution. CLIC TERRA Smart Biodegradable Mulch integrates IoT sensors, optimizing water use and improving crop resilience. By providing a bio-based, circular alternative, CLIC TERRA eliminates plastic waste, reduces environmental harm and enhances biodiversity and circularity. It promotes regenerative cultivation by offering a sustainable alternative to mainstream, resource-intensive products.

The Environmental Benefits

  • Plastic-Free & Bio-Based – Unlike traditional plastic mulches made from polyethylene, CLIC TERRA is made from natural, biodegradable materials, preventing plastic pollution and microplastic contamination in the soil.
  • CLIC TERRA’s bio-based fibers improve soil moisture retention and weed suppression more efficiently than conventional synthetic mulches, making it both effective and environmentally friendly.
  • Equipped with IoT sensors, CLIC TERRA monitors soil health in real-time while reducing CO₂ emissions through a blockchain-based carbon credit system, helping farmers meet sustainability goals.
  • 1 tonne of hair recycled by CLIC RECYCLE reduces 6.3 tonnes of CO₂ through the hair recycling program for hairdressers, the biodegradable mulch produced, as well as the use and production of plastic-based agricultural mulches that have been avoided.
  • CLIC TERRA reduces GHG emissions by transforming human hair waste into a biodegradable mulch that improves soil health, enhances waste management and promotes circularity. It minimizes energy and water consumption and emissions reducing resource depletion
  • CLIC TERRA transforms the regenerative resource—human hair—into a biodegradable mulch that enriches the soil, retains moisture and suppresses weeds. It reduces agricultural waste, enhances circularity, prevents microplastic contamination in soil
  • CLIC TERRA biodegradable mulch can replace plastic mulch in farming, preventing soil contamination from microplastics, improve soil organic matter, retain moisture to reduce water usage, and convert 1080 kg of hair waste into a valuable resources

The Financial Benefits

  • While plastic mulch films cost around €1.20–€1.50/m², CLIC TERRA biodegradable mulch avoids all end-of-life costs — making the total cost over the crop cycle comparable or lower, especially when plastic disposal is included
  • Clients using CLIC TERRA save significantly on labor and waste management, while improving soil quality and water retention. Over time, these benefits lead to lower fertilizer & irrigation costs, and enable access to carbon credits
