If you’re an individual, it’s easy: install anti food waste apps and develop the habit of checking them regularly. Indeed, around 120kg of food are wasted per person yearly at a global scale (1). To fight that, the United Nations set the Sustainable Development Goal 12, i.e., responsible production and consumption (1). Over the last years, many solutions tackling this global challenge appeared. Now the solving tools exist, why leaving them unused? To get the bigger picture, around one in three people is subject to food insecurity throughout the world (8). In 2020 and 2021, 48.1% and 21.5% countries worldwide were subject to especially high food prices (8). Further, lost and wasted food strongly contributes to climate change by causing around 8 to 10% of yearly greenhouse gas worldwide, i.e., around five times more than those caused by aviation (9). When considering all production steps – from land use, to water, labour and energy required – lost and wasted food costs approximately €874 billion yearly to the world economy (9). To exemplify, in 2022 1.05 trillion kg of food were wasted globally (9). Food is the basis of all human livings and an incredible chance. Let’s make the best of it: check your apps daily to stop food waste while making great deals!
