At a Glance

We are looking for a Head of External Communications to offer strong organization and direction to the communication activities of the Solar Impulse Foundation (see more below). The ideal candidate will have worked in a medium-sized organization and have experience managing a small, multi-skilled team, as well as bring experience working with a variety of stakeholders both internal and external to the organization. Demonstrating a capacity to bring together the needs and requests of different departments while maintaining a coherent communications output is key.

Aim

To identify Solutions (products, processes, and services) that are both clean and profitable, and attribute them the Solar Impulse Efficient Solution Label through a trustworthy and verified methodology based on a rigorous assessment performed by external independent Experts. Each candidate Solution, who applies for the Label, is evaluated by three independent Experts against five criteria grouped in three different themes: Feasibility, Environmental Impact and Profitability. Following the evaluation from the independent Expert, the Solutions which were successfully selected, formally join the 1000Solutions portfolio, and become part of the Labeled Solutions Community.

Profile sought

  • At least 8 years experience in communication roles with progressive responsibility, including 3 years in a senior management role
  • Strong organisational and management skills, experience in small- to medium-sized organizations, overseeing a mid-size team of 5-8, including a coordinator, social media officer, copy-editors, press relations, video production.
  • Experience in the areas of sustainability, technology, business, climate change, energy transition, politics, economics
  • Demonstrated experience running multifaceted media campaigns, including some experience of online and on-the-ground events.
  • Able to develop and implement a strategy for the communications team to achieve its own objectives, while also providing support to the needs of other departments (membership outreach, partnerships, public affairs, office of Bertrand Piccard).
  • Strong communication skill, both written and verbal in French and English
  • Very savvy user of essential social media platforms (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, WeChat)
  • Strong editorial judgment and attention to detail
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and thrive in a dynamic fast-paced environment
  • Proficient in social media publishing tools (e.g. Sprout, Sprinklr, etc.)
  • Background in working with agencies
  • Working understanding of Photoshop, InDesign and other graphic design services and in video production (Final Cut Pro)

Nice to haves

  • Experience with public speaking and representing an organization in public settings.

Main Responsibilities

Strategy and Planning

  • Determine external communications strategy serving the overall objectives of the Foundation, taking into account the priority activities of other departments, including outreach and management of members, partnerships, public affairs, digital platforms, the office of Bertrand Piccard.
  • Edit and Manage the editorial strategy of the Foundation
  • Support the development of coherent messaging and positioning of Bertrand Piccard as a thought leader in the spheres of sustainability, politics and business.
  • In line with the current objectives of the Foundation, diversify the audience base to include more technical, business and politically oriented groups.
  • Grow the profile of the Foundation in new territories and languages, especially outside of Europe
  • Use of data and meaningful metrics to measure, target and ameliorate communication activities and ameliorate to ensure progress toward objectives.
  • Manage the communications budget effectively and efficiently.

Team Management and content creation

  • Liaise frequently with the senior management team and department heads to ensure alignment with organisational activities.
  • With the support of the communications team, build and run campaigns to achieve specific, targeted objectives in support of operational activities, especially recruitment of members (innovators, investors or implementers) to the World Alliance for Efficient Solutions.
  • Oversee the development of creative, interesting, inspiring and meaningful content serving organisational objectives that remains on message. This includes management of external providers.

Public Relations

  • Responsible for reputation management for the Solar Impulse Foundation, and Bertrand Piccard. Provide advice and guidance on all communications matters, developing messaging for the effective handling of issues that may arise.
  • Further expand and develop relationships with key media and partners to maximise impact and reach of Foundation messaging, to transition toward new audiences, and to maximise exposure of the Foundation and its activities, capitalising on the reputation of Solar Impulse and Bertrand Piccard.
