CSMED - Robust Concentrated Solar Systems which distil pure water from otherwise unusable water sources or effluents to supply/supplement water where needed

This Solution aims to provide sustainable, cost-efficient, robust and simple to operate technology which cleans/distils wastewater and otherwise unusable, or contaminated water sources, to provide clean, pure and safe water for where there is need. Concentrated Solar Multi Effect Distillation & Dewatering Systems (CSMED) uses solar thermal energy to process water from a range of sources including, for example, agriculture, industry, mining or municipal wastewater, brackish bore and hyper-saline water (including salt lakes), seawater and even mine tailings dams. The clean and safe water can then be reused for agriculture, mining and industry, thus taking pressure off precious freshwater sources. In addition, it can also be used to supply or supplement safe drinking water where needed, made available for municipal and local business use or be released back into the natural landscape. Reclaiming, purifying and reusing water reduces risks of leaching and release of contaminated wastewater into soils, watercourses, groundwater and marine environments.

Key features

  • Each CSMED unit can supply around 10,000,000 litres of distilled water p.a to where there is need from otherwise unusable sources, reducing stress on available fresh water sources.
  • Each CSMED unit can provide enough distilled water per day at source and off grid for in excess of 3,000 kg of green hydrogen production
  • The CSMED units utilisation of Solar Energy as the primary source is estimated to result in 180MT - 350 MT of CO2e savings p.a. per unit when compared with fossil fuel powered alternatives
  • The CSMED Dewatering system can provide Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) solutions that can eliminate environmental impact of concentrated brine discharge into the environment


  • At Scale, CSMED Levelised Cost of Water is calculated to be in line with current costs of tap water in some regions
  • In some cases, for example, in remote communities, the CSMED cost of water can be up to 70% cheaper when compared with current supply practices
  • In some regions the CSMED units used to process contaminated water on site can save customers around 90% on their current clean water supply costs
