Description
Traditional electricity generation on islands and in isolated grids is very carbon intensive and also very expensive. In most locations world-wide renewable sources such as solar and wind will reduce generation cost by at least 100€/MWh. To harvest this potential for cleaner and cheaper energy, the energy system itself must be made compatible with dominating renewable (mostly volatile) generation through the implementation of demand side management. Easy Smart Grid develops smart grid solutions at a cost level low enough to maintain the savings at the level of the whole energy system. They are also resilient enough to be maintained within the limitations of remote places and also allow high levels of customer data protection and cyber security.

CLEAN ENERGY FOR lOCAL ENERGY COMMUNITIES THROW EFFICIENT DEMAND SIDE MANAGEMENT TECHNOLOGY

Description
Smar Grid technology controls the energy balance with more integration of renewable energy in connected micro grids.

New distributed power technologies are creating a decentralized power system with a large number of local actors challenging the distributions system operators and utility companies. In this scenario, more network infrastructure and storage capacity would be necessary and energy prices would rise massively - although renewable electricity is often cheaper than fossil. Easy Smart Grid technology allows the adaptation of the consumption to the energy supply and the boundary conditions of the network (Demand Side Management DSM). This technology coordinates the energy consumption of household’s flexible devices and industrial flexible processes with the energy peaks and energy valleys caused by the increase of renewable energy and also considering the capacity restrictions that exist in the electricity network. Easy Smart Grid derives the control signal from physical network variables such as frequency, connection load and voltage, enabling the devices to be activated automatically in the background. The system can immediately react to information on variations in the grid creating a real-time control signal, which is used by the algorithm, to decide if now is the best time to use electricity with this device or shift the load in a certain amount of time. The algorithm is installed in controllers already existing in the devices nowadays and it reacts decentrally to the variations of parameters in the electric network. Each device collaborates independently according to its particular situation to maintain stability in the electrical network. To manage a large decentral system, the replacement of merely technical concepts by market mechanisms is desirable: the control signal is used as a price-signal. When the sun shines and the wind blows, the higher electricity supply causes a low price level and flexible consumers switch on automatically. In windless hours during the night, the price rises, flexible consumers switch off and flexible generators (CHP) are activated. Even network bottlenecks can be mitigated or eliminated by this consumption flexibility. By integrating and rewarding flexibility of even the smallest decentral generators, consumers and storage devices, a maximum amount of volatile generation (photovoltaic, wind) can be integrated into the grid at minimum cost. ESG creates a real market within the grid for such flexibility, ensuring fair pricing and a “merit order” where cheapest flexibility is integrated first. The price signal is an internal system indicator used to optimize the use of energy and ensure the "merit order" within the system. This can be used even though the energy supplier does not offer yet a variable price option. Nevertheless, for the future energy market, many countries are introducing variable electricity prices in order to turn end customers into market players (see recent EU regulation), Easy Smart Grid technology ensures that infrastructure (particularly flexible machinery, devices and storage) is already in place then.
