The 2050 challenge requires the world to feed 9 to 10 billion people without compromising the needs of future generations. At SOP, we believe the only way to achieve this goal is through Sustainable Intensive Agriculture.
Founded in 2001 by Marco Poggianella, the Italian company SOP - Save Our Planet places both environmental protection and farmer economics at the center of all its activities. Thanks to the proprietary technology developed by SOP’s founder, the company has developed farmer oriented solutions that could enable faster climate policies.

Its products for crop systems and livestock operations interact with the microbial and biological activity of soils, plants, and animals and enable stable and consistent yields while reducing the emissions of greenhouse gases and other pollutants. SOP solutions include products:
• for CROPS, which help farmers reduce the use of synthetic fertilizers, lowering inputs costs and mitigating the environmental impact of intensive cultivation of staple crops, including corn, wheat, soy, rice, alfalfa, and cover crops;
• for ANIMALS, which enhance overall health, improve feed conversion efficiency, and reduces costs of operations, while improving the production of milk, meat, and eggs;
• for WASTE MANAGEMENT, which reduce odors, ammonia emissions, and greenhouse gases, while mitigating the impact livestock waste on the environment and the surrounding communities.
The efficacy of the products has been established through scientific studies conducted by several of universities, including UC Davis, Cornell, University of Milan, Guelph, and the University of Piacenza.
SOP LAGOON, the product for manure lagoon management, was studied for its ability to reduce ammonia and GHG emissions from dairy liquid manure. The results of this study were published in September 2019 in the international peer reviewed journal called “Sustainability.”
SOP products are currently distributed in North America and Europe, enabling farmers to achieve sustainability within intensive agriculture across economic, environmental and social impacts.

SOP® LAGOON is a powdered additive for the treatment of the liquid manure of dairy cows. It helps the farmers with the management of liquid manure, dissolving any crusts or sediment, keeping it fluid and reducing/eliminating the need for agitators.
Furthermore, it reduces the formation and emission of odors, ammonia and GHGs from the stored manure, as well as that spread on the fields, and improves the fertilizing properties of the liquid manure.

The results, from studies carried out at both the University of Milan and the University of California at Davis, indicate that SOP LAGOON is the only additive in the world capable of simultaneously reducing emissions of ammonia and GHGs such as methane, nitrous oxide and carbon dioxide, without accumulating nitrates in the liquid manure.

A scientific study, published in the journal "Sustainability" (Borgonovo et al., September 2019, https://www.mdpi.com/2071-1050/11/18/4998), demonstrates how, after 4 days of using SOP LAGOON, gas emissions are reduced:
-100% of ammonia
-21.5% of methane
-100% of nitrous oxide
-22.9% of carbon dioxide

Furthermore, the empowered capacity to influence microorganisms results in a reduction of crust and sediment and an improvement in manure fluidization, as well as a reduction of odor and a reduction in the attraction of flies.

A specific test carried out by UC Davis has also confirmed a significant reduction in odor.

It is, therefore, possible to improve the sustainability of liquid manure management: • Economic sustainability for the farmer, limiting agitation, spreading and fertilization costs
•Environmental sustainability, reducing the use of synthetic fertilizers, the risk of nitrate leaching into ground waters and GHG emissions
• Social sustainability, limiting ammonia and odor emissions, precursors of fine particulate formation.

SOP® COCUS Maize+, applied as a seed dressing before sowing, conditions the microbial flora in the soil in order to improve Nitrogen Use Efficiency. It is thus possible to reduce the use of synthetic nitrogen fertilizers by 30% already on first year without losing yield. A study carried out at Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, in Piacenza, Italy, demonstrated that the fields cultivated with 30% less nitrogen and with the addition of SOP COCUS MAIZE+ at sowing yielded the same tonnage per hectare than the fields with standard fertilization, but without SOP. This translates into immediate savings for the famers without compromising their ability to produce food to nourish the people. At the same time, the reduction of fertilization mitigates the ammonia and nitrous oxide emissions from the fields, with positive impacts on the surrounding communities and for the people.
