Laboratory of Heterogeneous Mixtures & Combustion Systems (NTUA.HMCS): School of Mechanical Engineering of NTUA

The National Technical University of Athens, sometimes known as Athens Polytechnic, is among the oldest and most prestigious higher education institutions of Greece.
NTUA is divided into nine academic Schools, eight being for the engineering disciplines, including architecture, and one for applied sciences (mathematics and physics). Undergraduate studies have a duration of 5 years.
The university comprises about 700 of academic staff, 140 scientific assistants and 260 administrative and technical staff. It has, also, a total number of 8,500 undergraduates and about 1,500 postgraduate students. Eight of the NTUA's Schools are housed at the Zografou Campus, while the School of Architecture is based at the Patision Complex.
The Laboratory of Heterogeneous Mixtures & Combustion Systems (NTUA.HMCS) is an accredited laboratory established by Government Decree in 2002. It is served by 5 faculty members (1 professor, 4 post-doc teaching and research staff), 6 post-doc research associates, 5 doctoral candidates, ca. 15 graduate students on an annual basis and three members of staff for administrative and technical support.
NTUA.HMCS specializes in determining the thermal and fire behaviour of conventional and innovative building materials and systems implementing a multi-scale approach that starts from micro-scale (e.g. measurements of material physical properties, simulations of phase change and pyrolysis chemistry), to meso-scale assessment at component (e.g. energy assessment of components, Reaction to Fire testing, medium-scale compartment fire tests, measurements in low-to-high temperature furnaces, heat transfer simulations) ending to macro-scale assessment at system level (e.g. large-scale fire tests and large-scale CFD thermal and fire simulations, energy saving for different building typologies and energy systems using energetic-techno-economic- environmental assessment).
