Open Network for Sustainability Assessment Information
How sustainable is a product? What impacts does it cause? How "clean" is a clean innovation and compared to what? We provide open access data and open source software for transparent product foot printing.
Clean, sustainable, responsible production are widely used concepts. But how does one transparently assess how clean a solution is (if it is at all) compared to its alternatives? How does one quantify the sustainability performances of competing products? How does one know the impacts associated to a product throughout its life-cycle? Transparent data for product footprint are the only way to answer this questions, avoid green washing and burden shifting.
BONSAI is a network of industrial ecologists developing an e-infrastructure to make reliable and unbiased sustainability information on products – “product footprints” – readily and freely available to support product comparisons and decisions making. Product footprint is carried out through a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). LCA is a scientific framework for systematically assess environmental, social and economic impacts associated with a product, during its whole life-cycle. Reliable and unbiased data are key for transparent and reliable results. The BONSAI virtual research environment will not only be an open access database; the e-infrastructure intends to store open source software for linking data and create system models.
